UON would like to congratulate James Loonam on an inspiring effort fundraising and competing in his first ever Triathlon, raising much needed funds for the Australian Heart Foundation. James’ brother David sadly passed away earlier this year from a sudden and unexpected heart attack at the young age of 34. In memory of David, James committed to completing the Triathlon while rallying friends, co-workers and his community to contribute to the cause.
After spending seven weeks training between shifts in the Pilbara and with the support of friends on the day, James completed the Triathlon in an impressive 42 minutes and 41 seconds. Celebrations followed at The Generous Squire in Scarborough where raffle winners were announced, all prizes being generously donated by local businesses including a Perth Glory jersey signed by the team.
James single-handedly raised $5,080.00 for the Australian Heart Foundation, an incredible achievement given his time spent working long shifts away on site. When asked how he managed this during such a difficult time, James said the support he received to achieve his goal was overwhelming; “My friends, co-workers and managers were incredibly supportive, making it easy for me travel back home and be with my family at the time of receiving the bad news, with kind messages of support and generous donations from the whole team, I couldn’t have done it without them”
David Loonam will not be forgotten and his memory will remain a positive contribution to the community and UON team. For more information or to make a donation, please visit the Heart Foundation website
